There is no law that specifically says “you must PAT test”. However, landlords and employers have a legal duty to make sure electrical equipment they supply is safe — for businesses this comes from the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989.
Why PAT testing is the usual answer
Portable appliance testing combines a visual inspection with electrical tests, and gives you a dated record for every item. It is the simplest way to show you have taken reasonable steps to keep appliances safe.
Who should test?
- Landlords supplying appliances in furnished lets and HMOs
- Offices, shops, schools and salons
- Hospitality venues and commercial kitchens
Prices
PAT testing starts from £49.99 for up to 10 appliances, with each item labelled and recorded.
